Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hit and Run Accidents.

93.

asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number of hit and run accidents each year since 1963 to the latest available date, (b) the number of motorists involved who were apprehended by the Gardaí and (c) the number of convictions arising out of these accidents.

Statistics of hit-and-run accidents on the lines asked for in the question were not compiled for the years before 1965. For the years 1965, 1966 and 1967 the numbers of such accidents reported to the Garda Síochána were 719, 859 and 869. The numbers prosecuted were 489, 573 and 570. Statistics of convictions have not been compiled and could now be obtained only by a re-examination of every individual file.

Can that not be done?

Only after a very considerable amount of expense, time and trouble.

If I give a few months notice, could I get that information in the future?

I have given the Deputy all the information that is immediately available. I do not think the extra information the Deputy seeks would justify going through all these individual files.

It should be very interesting if we had it in this House.
