Vol. 237 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closure of Laois School.

30.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received a request from Leix County Council to receive a deputation concerning the unusual circumstances surrounding the closing of the local national school at Briscoli in the parish of Ballyfin, County Leix; why he has not replied; if he will receive the proposed deputation with a view to reconsideration of this very urgent problem and the reopening of the school in question; and, if so, when.

While I am prepared to meet a deputation from the Laois County Council in regard to this matter I can hold out no hope whatsoever that the decision already made in this case will be altered. In fact the advent of a new and very much broadened curriculum for national schools makes it imperative that in the interests of the education of the children concerned schools such as Briscoli should be closed.
