Vol. 238 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Fire Fighting Services.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has considered further the position of the fire fighting services in Dún Laoghaire; and what steps are being taken to provide more effective fire fighting services there.

As I indicated in reply to previous questions by the Deputy the obligation to make provision for the prompt and efficient extinguishing of fires is imposed on sanitary authorities by the Fire Brigades Act, 1940. It has, however, been the policy of my Department to encourage these authorities to secure maximum efficiency in the organisation and equipment of their fire services. Following the destruction of St. Michael's Church, Dún Laoghaire, by fire in July, 1965, the fire fighting services in the borough were investigated by my Department's Fire Adviser and recommendations for the improvement of the services were made to the corporation. I am informed by the corporation that these recommendations have been implemented.

Is the Minister satisfied that the changes made are adequate to deal with any emergency in the future?

Yes. I am informed by the Corporation that the recommendations which the chief fire investigator of my Department made have been implemented and they are considered adequate.
