Vol. 238 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Parking Facilities.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government what plans he has to deal with the growing demand for public parking facilities in Dublin.

The provision of public parking facilities in Dublin is primarily a matter for Dublin Corporation. There are no plans from the corporation before me.

Would the Minister not agree that the parking situation in Dublin is getting more difficult from day to day and does he not think that he has an overall responsibility to do something about it?

It is the responsibility of the Dublin Corporation and if the Deputy knows any member on Dublin Corporation he might like to get in touch with him. I am aware that the situation is becoming more difficult because of the increased prosperity in the country and it is also becoming more difficult for the roads in Dublin city to carry the increased volume of traffic.

What about the poor people walking the streets?

The mere provision of more parking places will not solve the position in Dublin.

Would the Minister not agree that if the Dublin Corporation had any proposals they would have to go to his Department for sanction; therefore, would he not further agree that he has an overriding responsibility in relation to this?

Would the Minister tell the House where the large sums of money collected by way of parking fines are going?

I do not know what the Deputy is talking about. He is trying to shout the Chair down.
