Vol. 238 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Summer Time.

53.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he has examined the effects of the extension of summer time during the winter months on the number of road accidents, in particular those involving children; if he will give relevant comparative statistics; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is too early to attempt to make any analysis of this kind.

An analysis will be made later in the year by an Foras Forbartha, to whom all factual details relating to road accidents are furnished by the Garda Síochána and who have undertaken the task of processing and analysing the material.

Is it proposed to revise the present Summer Time Order for the coming year or is it to continue?

So far no decision has been taken to revise it. Any difficulty that arises, particularly as regards schools, can be solved by those concerned.

In view of the concern which has been expressed by parents and teachers at the present hours, would the Minister consider the matter further before next winter?

He will not be there.

I shall consider it further and give the benefit of my mature consideration to Deputy Sweetman or his successor who will be there after the next election.

Surely the Minister understands there is very little use in asking the schools to change the hours unless there is co-operation with CIE in regard to changing timetables? There would have to be an overall scheme.

The advice that was given when this matter was brought in was that we should follow the position in Britain. The difficulties that have arisen here can be overcome by those concerned if they go about it.

In arriving at his decision would the Minister bear in mind the extra cost of providing early morning lighting in all the urban areas?

That is a separate question.

It is part of the consideration arising out of this.

The remaining Questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
