Vol. 238 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Prison Service Living Accommodation.

14.

asked the Minister for Justice when he proposes to provide outside living accommodation for members of the Prison Service who at present must live within the prison buildings.

The conditions of appointment of prison officers require unmarried officers to reside in the prison to which they are assigned. As the object of this condition is to ensure that adequate manpower is readily available to meet emergencies when the full staff is not on duty, I am not prepared to modify it.
