Vol. 238 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Underground Car Park.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance which section of the St. Stephen's Green (Dublin) Act, 1877, prevents the Office of Public Works from constructing a car park beneath it; and if he is aware that the intention of section 15 of this Act is hampered by the lack of public parking places which prevent many of the public from using this park for their recreation and enjoyment.

The legal advice obtained by the Commissioners of Public Works indicates that the construction of an underground car park at St. Stephen's Green would conflict with section 15 of the St. Stephen's Green (Dublin) Act, 1877.

I am not aware that the public are prevented by lack of car-parking space from using this park for their recreation and enjoyment.

Would the Government consider amending the Act to enable a public car park to be built?

I do not think I personally would look with any favour on any interference with St. Stephen's Green. It is too important to Dublin generally and to its citizens.

This is to build under it.

You did not think of that when you were pulling down the Georgian houses.

I doubt in any case that it would provide any great relief in the traffic congestion in Dublin city.
