Vol. 238 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Extension of Burtonport Pier.

50.

asked the Minister for Finance if a final decision has yet been taken regarding the extension to the existing pier at Burtonport, County Donegal; and, if so, when work will commence.

The proposal for the extension of the existing pier will be further considered when the clearance of the approach channel is completed and the effect on the activities of the harbour is known.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that this is one of the 10 most important fishing ports in the country and not a penny has been spent on the extension of the harbour within the past 30 years? Further, there are now eight fishing boats based in the harbour and it is impossible to discharge fish when so many boats are there at the one time.

I am aware that the Donegal County Council indicated their willingness to accept the grant issued last August. I am further aware it would be unwise to commence the removal of the rock bar in the winter season.

We are not talking about clearing the approach channel or dredging the harbour. We are talking about the extension of the existing pier.

I am talking about what must precede any extension and that is the removal of the rock bar. When the rock bar is removed we will be able to see what further use can be made of the harbour.

That is only a small job, about £2,000 or £3,000.

It is £12,000.

It is still only a small job.

I think the fishermen involved would be very glad to have the rock bar removed.

We are talking about it so long that the fishermen are getting fed up.

We are doing it now.
