Vol. 238 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Mineral Exploration and Development.

71.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the Government's attitude to plans to build a mercury roasting plant for Gortdrum mines, and if he will detail the Governments long-term intentions for participation of the public sector of the economy in mining (a) copper, (b) silver, (c) zinc, (d) lead, (e) mercury and (f) other substances.

The Government would welcome any plans to build a mercury roasting plant at Gortdrum Mines. Any project of this nature which would utilise native resources and give worthwhile employment is, of course, to be encouraged.

The policy of the Government is not to participate directly in mineral exploration and development but to provide adequate facilities and incentives to competent private mining concerns to engage in such activities. The effectiveness of this policy is reflected in the large number of prospecting licences granted in recent years and the important discoveries already made. I am satisfied that it is providing for the thorough and efficient exploration and development of our mineral resources.
