Vol. 238 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - “Buy Irish” Policy.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether there is a predetermined policy in the semi-State bodies under the aegis of his Department to buy Irish in their business activities.

It is my policy and also the established practice of the semi-State bodies under the aegis of my Department that they give a preference to Irish manufactured goods at all times.

Is the Minister aware that the B and I went to Italy to get a calendar printed?

I am not so aware. All I can say is that I have discussed this matter with all the State companies sitting together, generally every year, and I am satisfied that they do make a great effort to purchase Irish-manufactured goods. Indeed, I have lists of companies with whom they have had special negotiations to see how far their manufacturing plans and the type of goods they manufacture could fit in with the requirements of the company. I am convinced that they do make a very big effort in this regard.

The Minister may take my word for it that the B and I did go to Italy to have a calendar printed, and in view of the Minister's supposed interest in this matter would he agree that his statement comes as a surprise to this side of the House?
