Vol. 238 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Subsidy.

18.

andMrs. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that many small farmers are buying cattle that have been brought in from Northern Ireland with punched ears unaware of the fact that, when they come to sell these cattle later on, no subsidy will be paid; and, if so, what steps he is taking to avoid this serious loss to such farmers.

Cattle imported from the Six Counties after being earmarked there—in both ears—under the Fatstock Guarantee Scheme are fat animals intended for immediate slaughter. The fact that these Six County animals do not qualify for subsidy under the Beef Export Guarantee Scheme has been publicised on many occasions by my Department and is well known to the persons who normally buy them here.
