Vol. 238 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Membership.

3.

asked the Taoiseach whether the latest Italian initiative on Britain's application for EEC membership has been considered by the Government; and whether it has the support of this country.

I take it that the Deputy's question relates to the idea put forward by the Belgian Foreign Minister in October last, which has been the subject of consideration in the Western European Union by a group chaired by Signor Medici of Italy. The group's report was discussed at the meeting last week of the Western European Union but Ireland, not being a member of WEU, was not present. While no communiqué was issued following the meeting, we understand that, as no concrete conclusions were arrived at, it was agreed to consider the matter further at the next meeting of the Council of WEU in May.

Could the Taoiseach say if there are any arrangements whereby we have any connection with the meetings in WEU, or whether we have had any prior consultation with any single member, say with Britain?

We do not have any prior consultations and we have no arrangements made to attend any of the meetings.
