Vol. 238 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Garda Stations.

45.

asked the Minister for Justice what Garda stations he proposes to close within the next twelve months in the Kenmare and Castletownbere districts of County Kerry; and how he will dispose of the stations.

I would refer the Deputy to my replies to recent Parliamentary Questions in which I stated that as a result of a general review of the organisation of the Force, I have reached a tentative conclusion to accept the Commissioner's recommendation that about 30 of the 750 stations in the country be closed.

Disposal of the State's interest in Garda stations which it is decided to close would be a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works.

46.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the unrest among the people of Creeslough and surrounding districts in East Donegal at the closure plans for the Garda station; and, if so, if he will take steps to ensure that this station will not be closed.

There are no plans for the closing of the Garda station at Creeslough. As a result of the general review of Garda manpower to which I referred in recent Parliamentary Questions, I have decided to accept the Commissioner's recommendation to reduce the strength of the station from three to one.
