Vol. 238 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Personal Allowances.

44.

asked the Minister for Finance the cost in the first year, and in a full year, of increasing personal allowances so that a single man earning £10 a week or less and with no other income would not have to pay income tax; the amount the personal allowance would have to be increased to provide this together with the cost of similarly providing for £20 per week for a married man without children not being liable for tax if all earned income allowance and no other income.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate the reply which is in the form of a tabular statement.

Following is the statement:—

Personal allowance at present

Amount of allowance required to leave no tax payable on £10 a week (single persons) and on £20 a week (married persons with no children)—all earned

Increase required in the amount of the allowance

Estimated current cost, first year

The statement includes figures in respect of widow(ers), as it would scarcely be possible to exclude them from any increases in the personal allowances.
