Vol. 238 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Amalgamation of Creameries.

18.

Mr. O'Malley

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the strong desire of the suppliers to a number of creameries in South-East Limerick to amalgamate their creameries with Mitchelstown Creamery; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that a few creamery societies in South-East Limerick would like to amalgamate with Mitchelstown Co-operative Society. However, in any rationalisation of the creamery industry, it is necessary to maintain a reasonable balance between the quantities of milk available in the various rationalised groups so that each group will be viable and capable of providing for its milk suppliers the benefits of largescale processing and increased diversification of production.
