Vol. 238 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - County Offaly School.

56.

asked the Minister for Education the cause of the delay in the erection of the proposed new national school at Bloomhill, Athlone, County Offaly towards which his Department sanctioned a grant in February, 1968; if he is aware that for many years the existing building has been condemned as unfit and the local parents have been protesting regarding the conditions their children must experience during school hours; if he will now order a full scale inquiry into all the circumstances surrounding the delays in this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A site for a new school at Bloomhill was obtained in 1965. Difficulties arose in regard to getting title to this site. In order, however, to permit of arrangements being made by the Commissioners for the erection of the school a grant was sanctioned in February, 1968, pending the question of title being resolved. Title to the site was not established until October, 1968, and tenders were subsequently invited. The manager has been authorised to accept a tender and building work is due to commence in the present week.
