Vol. 238 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Structure of Higher Education.

68.

Mr. O'Malley, Mr. T. O'Donnell

andMr. Coughlan asked the Minister for Education whether he considers that our existing universities are out of date; and whether he has plans to modify them.

The Commission on Higher Education recommended changes in the structure of the system of higher education. The decisions of the Government announced on 6th July, 1968, and 16th August, 1968, set out, in general terms, what the future structure is to be. The Higher Education Authority is at present preparing recommendations on the nature and form of legislation required to give effect to these decisions.

Would the Minister say whether he regards the existing universities as being outdated? He is recorded as having said so.

I did not say that. It was a misinterpretation. What I am saying is that the existing conception in regard to higher education will have to be brought up-to-date and that institutions other than universities have their part to play.
