Vol. 238 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Shipping.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of voyages with cargo between ports inside the State in the year 1968; and the number of these undertaken by Irish registered ships.

The number of arrivals of vessels, with and without cargo, at ports in Ireland from other ports in Ireland in the year 1968 was 1,483. Of these 371 were Irish registered vessels. Separate data for the numbers of vessels with cargo are not available for years subsequent to 1966.

The figures given above do not cover arrivals of vessels at ports within the State which have on board cargo shipped outside the State or cargo shipped in the State for discharge outside the State or passengers for or from a port outside the State.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the net income in foreign currency earned (a) by Irish Shipping Limited and (b) by Irish shipping as a whole for the year 1968.

The information available relates to the total gross freight earnings of Irish shipping companies from all activities except coastal trade as well as passenger receipts outside the State, less payments made outside the State in respect of operating expenses. The amounts of these net earnings in 1967, the latest year for which data are available, were £1.7 million and £3.5 million for (i) Irish Shipping Limited and (ii) all Irish shipping companies, respectively.
