Vol. 238 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cement Production.

55.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a dispute between management and labour in a company (name supplied) following the dismissal of members of craft unions, has brought the production of cement to a standstill; and that this stoppage is likely to affect the entire building industry; if there are any steps open to him to prevent damage to the building industry arising from this dispute; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the special emergency resolution, unanimously adopted by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions on the 11th instant, with regard to a dispute that is now in progress which has brought to a halt the production of cement in this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Question Nos. 55 and 56 together.

As the Deputy will be aware, I announced on 12th February, 1969, that, having regard to the importance of the building industry, which was not itself in any way involved in the present labour dispute, I had decided to issue licences to enable cement to be imported, duty-free, by builders and merchants. I now understand that the Drogheda cement factory has resumed production.
