Vol. 238 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Hazard.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will have an independent examination carried out by a technical officer in his Department in relation to a traffic hazard outside houses (details supplied) which is endangering life and property in the Upper Drimnagh area with a view to eliminating this hazard.

The elimination of a traffic hazard is a matter for the Garda Síochána or for the local authority.

The carrying out of an examination as suggested by the Deputy would not, therefore, be a matter for my Department.

Is the Minister aware that the traffic study group set up by the Government and the city council recommended that this hazard should be removed but the Associated Properties Group have consistently refused to allow the tenants to remedy the existing scandalous situation? Ambulances or fire brigades would be unable to gain access to the majority of the houses in the area. Will the Minister take some action to ensure that the lives of the people are protected against a group like Associated Properties?

I am aware of the fact that this company have been completely unco-operative with the local authority in this matter, but the houses are theirs and it is, therefore, a difficult situation with which to deal. I am, however, studying the matter to see if there is any possible action that can be taken to ensure a greater degree of responsibility by the company in question.
