asked the Minister for Finance (a) the total amount of salaries and wages in respect of which tax under Schedule E was paid in the years 1947-48, 1957-58 and 1967-68, (b) the total amount of tax collected under Schedule E for 1947-48, 1957-58 and 1967-68 and (c) the number of persons who paid income tax under Schedule E in 1947-48, 1957-58 and 1967-68.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement and I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Actual figures for net receipt of tax under Schedule E are not available. For the years 1947-48 and 1957-58 the figures given represent the net produce of tax under Schedule E for those years. (Net produce of tax is the estimated ultimate yield from tax assessed in the year, whether actually collected in that year or later, after deducting all discharges and remissions and setting off all repayments.) For the year 1967-68 the figure given is a reasonably reliable estimate of the net receipt under Schedule E for that year, as it consists almost wholly of tax collected under PAYE and under Rule 5 of the Rules applicable to Schedule E. (Rule 5 relates to tax deducted from official salaries.)
