Vol. 238 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distributive Grocery Trade.

53.

Mr. O'Malley

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there is a grave danger that a few foreign-owned combines may soon achieve a near monopoly position in the distributive grocery trade; and if he will consider legislation to prevent this.

I have had representations about the extent of foreign ownership in this field. Information at present available does not support the view that we are approaching a situation where intervention by me would be called for, but I am keeping in touch with developments so as to be in a position to act if necessary.
