Vol. 238 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Turf.

10.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he foresees any lessening in the demand for turf in view of the increasing dependence on fuel oil; and whether any consideration is being given to this possible problem.

I am aware of the growing demand for fuel oil in this country with the consequent decline in the popularity of solid fuels including turf. In so far as the domestic and private industrial market is concerned, this trend seems to be continuing. As regards State and semi-State bodies, local authorities and related bodies, the established policy of the Government is to ensure that all such bodies give preference to the use of native fuels and that when they are contemplating the construction of new buildings or the reconstruction of old ones, they consult with Bord na Móna as to the practicability of using turf.

The ESB in accordance with Government policy use the maximum possible amount of turf for electricity generation. I understand that Bord na Móna are competing vigorously in the open market for fuel and I am not considering any proposals or interference in the domestic and private industrial market.
