Vol. 238 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University of the Air.

26.

asked the Minister for Education if any proposals are in hand for the establishment of a university of the air using the facilities of Radio Telefís Éireann for the purpose.

I am not aware of any proposals for the establishment of a University of the Air using the facilities of Radio Telefís Éireann. Any such proposal would be primarily a matter for consideration by the RTE Authorities in consultation with the appropriate higher education authorities.

Might I ask the Minister if he would consider extending the educational service by Radio Telefís Éireann to adult education so that thousands of workers in this city and throughout the country, who were deprived of the opportunity of going to university, who are working in factories, offices, on the docks, on building sites and on the land, and who pay taxes to keep the present privileged classes at UCD and TCD, could avail of an opportunity of higher education? Would the Minister give ordinary people this chance of university education? I can assure him they would appreciate it much more than the present students in our universities.

Would the Minister favour something like what has been done under the British Labour Government? He might consult with the Wilson Government because it has done a great deal of work on these lines.

And West Germany.

I am sure if the Government looked at what the British socialists have done they might get some ideas.

(Interruptions.)
