Vol. 238 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Driving Tests.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government if applicants who fail a driving test can have the same driver tester for the next test so that credit for the proficiency in the first test can be carried forward and credit for faults in the first test which have been rectified can be taken into account.

Under the statutory provisions governing the conduct of driving tests, each test must stand as a unit and it would, therefore, not be possible to arrange that a re-test should be on a partial basis. Driver testers are rotated in the interests of the applicants themselves.

Would it not be more sensible to have the same tester each time? I know a man who has done the test seven times, who had seven different testers and who was failed each time on a different subject. He had to sell the car because it was useless to him. Surely he should have had the same tester each time?

The usual request is the other way around—not to have the same tester.
