Vol. 238 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Day Release Schemes.

60.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will give details of the number of day release schemes operating within the State; where each is located; and the classification and apprenticeship grades of the apprentices concerned.

Under the Industrial Training Act, 1967, An Chomhairle Oiliúna has the responsibility for arranging day release courses for apprentices. On receipt of a request from the Deputy, An Chomhairle will be prepared to let him have such detailed information on this matter as he requires.

Is the Minister not aware that there are many day release schemes in existence? Surely he could get that information?

The information could be got, but it would take a couple of weeks to collect it. However, that is not the point: this is part of the day-to-day activities of An Chomhairle Oiliúna and they will be quite happy to give the information direct to the Deputy. Only in matters of policy would they be subject to me.

This is the old bone of contention.

Surely the Minister will agree that every Deputy is expected to encourage day release courses and surely it is imperative that Deputies should have this information to assist them in such encouragement.

The point I am making is that this information is readily available direct from An Chomhairle.

But the Minister could not get it.
