Vol. 238 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Education and Unemployment.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give a breakdown of the present unemployment rate by giving details of those unemployed who received education (a) only to primary level, (b) only to secondary level, (c) to university level and (d) to third level.

Particulars of the education received by unemployed persons are not available from the current Live Register statistics. Information on this subject is, however, available from the 1966 Census of Population when all persons who had ceased their full-time education were asked to indicate each type of school, college, et cetera, attended full-time. I propose, with your permission, Sir, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the numbers of males and females who were described as unemployed at the time of the Census, classified by highest type of educational establishment attended and also the figures expressed as percentages of the total numbers gainfully occupied in the same categories. It should be particularly noted that the figures relate to type of educational establishment attended regardless of whether or not the persons concerned completed their courses or obtained qualifications.

Following is the statement:

PERSONS stated to be out of work at the 1966 Census (a) classified by highest type of educational establishment attended full-time and (b) expressed as percentages of the total numbers gainfully occupied.
