Vol. 238 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick City Markets.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the value of property held by Limerick Markets Trustees and general developments within the city of Limerick, he will introduce legislation to enable Limerick Corporation to take over these markets.

I do not propose to introduce legislation on the lines suggested.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that, with one exception, these markets have been closed and gone derelict for at least five years? They are a most valuable property in the centre of a developing city. It is holding up our plans with regard to the development of the city of Limerick because the Minister will not move this legislation and let us develop Limerick as we want to develop it. I appeal to him not to continue to retard us.

Hear, hear.

The trustees are the members of the corporation, the county council and the Chamber of Commerce: is that not right?

The Parliamentary Secretary should know that better than I. That is his business, not mine. More or less. The property is held in the bankruptcy court. We have to have legislation in order to give us a chance to take it over.

There is more involved in it——

If the Minister investigates the case he will find that I am right. We have studied the case closely over the years. It is the duty of the Parliamentary Secretary to do the job.

There is a problem there, all right. We accept that.

That is why we are all here—because there are problems all over the country. Do not turn your back on the problems. Face them as we face them.

Deputies

Oh.

Get the other people involved together and make an approach and there might be something in that.
