Vol. 238 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revaluation of Commercial Properties.

56.

asked the Minister for Finance how often commercial properties are revalued for rating purposes.

I am informed by the Commissioner of Valuation that it is the function of rating authorities to forward to him annually, by the 15th June, lists of cases, including commercial properties, in their areas for revision of valuation or first-time fixing of valuation. The results are issued to rating authorities for publication on the following 1st March.

The Commissioner has no control over the frequency of revision of valuations, the initiative in the matter being the responsibility of the rating authorities.

Generally speaking, commercial properties are included in the revision lists where the premises have been improved or otherwise altered or are new properties.

The Minister will appreciate the need for regular revaluation of commercial properties and that there is no obligation on owners of property to notify a rating authority about improvements et cetera.

I think the Planning Acts take care of that.

Would the Minister not agree that there are many properties in Dublin that have not been valued for a long time and that revaluation is long overdue in the case of many of them?

I am only statutorily responsible for the Commissioner of Valuation. Any local authority has access to the Commissioner of Valuation but they must take the initiative.
