Vol. 238 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crumlin Vandalism.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice if in view of the increasing incidence of vandalism in the Crumlin area of Dublin he proposes to increase the number of gardaí patrolling the area.

As I have indicated on a number of recent occasions in replies to Parliamentary Questions and in public statements I am reviewing the distribution of the Garda Síochána with a view to arranging that the strengths at various centres will be related to the most urgent public need, that is the prevention and detection of crime.

The needs of the Dublin Metropolitan Area, including Crumlin Station, are present to my mind. The strength of the Force at Crumlin has been trebled, from 17 to 52, since 1950.

I am informed by the Commissioner that the position as regards vandalism in the Crumlin area is neither materially better nor materially worse than it is in many other residential areas in Dublin in which a high proportion of the population are children or juveniles.
