Vol. 238 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Raids on Dispensaries.

90.

asked the Minister for Health if in view of the increased incidence of raids on dispensaries he is satisfied that adequate security precautions are taken with respect to addictive drugs stored in these dispensaries.

The security precautions referred to by the Deputy are primarily a matter for the Health Authorities concerned.

Early in December last I wrote to all health authorities regarding the safe custody and supervision of stocks of drugs liable to misuse. Amongst other things, I advised them to review critically, in consultation with the Garda, their existing precautionary arrangements regarding drugs to ensure that they were satisfactory. The health authorities are keeping me informed of the results of their reviews.

I presume the Deputy is particularly concerned with the situation in Dublin. My Department has been in consultation with the Health Authority in the matter. The authority are fully alive to the situation and have taken steps to improve the security arrangements at their dispensaries.
