Vol. 239 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Lights.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to erect traffic lights (a) at Goatstown Cross and (b) at Lower Kilmacud Road at its junction with the Stillorgan Road, Dublin.

The provision of traffic light signals is a matter for the local authority acting at the request or with the consent of the Garda Commissioner. Proposals come to me only in so far as a Road Fund grant is involved. In the case of each of these installations my Department some time ago indicated agreement in principle to charging the schemes to the Road Fund grant. Acceptance of tenders for the Kilmacud Road-Stillorgan installation was approved in June last. The Deputy will appreciate that further progress rests with Dublin County Council.

Surely the Minister can bring some pressure to bear on Dublin County Council in relation to these two very dangerous crossings, particularly in relation to the Stillorgan cross where a number of serious accidents have occurred in the last couple of weeks? I am glad that progress is being made there but Goats-town Cross, with the increase in the number of houses in that area, is becoming a very serious hazard for young school-going children and I ask the Minister to bring pressure to bear on the county council in relation to this matter.

There is nothing remaining for my Department to do in this regard. I have approved acceptance of the tender for Kilmacud Road-Stillorgan and indicated that the other scheme can be charged to the Road Fund grant.

If the Minister has made a recommendation, as he clearly has, what is the delay in this very important matter?

I do not know. The county council just have not provided them yet.
