Vol. 239 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nurses' Remuneration.

41.

asked the Minister for Health when an increase will be given to nurses working in county hospitals; and what rate of increase will be given to all grades of nurses.

I authorised all health authorities to pay an "eleventh round" increase of 9 per cent retrospective to 1st June last to all nurses employed by them.

A claim for increased remuneration on behalf of various grades of nurses, submitted by the Irish Nurses' Organisation, was heard recently by an arbitrator appointed under the Scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration for local authority officers, and the arbitrator has made certain recommendations.

If and when the nurses, and the employing health authorities, indicate their acceptance of the arbitration findings, I shall be happy to consider proposals for implementation of the increases.

With your permission I want to raise the subject matter of the delay in payment of grants to the Northern Utility Society in County Donegal on the Adjournment of the House this evening.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy Harte.
