Vol. 239 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Living Index.

3.

andMr. Timmins asked the Taoiseach the percentage increase in the cost of living index between April, 1965 and February, 1969.

The Consumer Price Index is calculated in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November each year. The latest available index is for mid-November, 1968. Between mid-February, 1965 and mid-November, 1968 the index (base August 1947=100) rose by 14.7 per cent. The increase between mid-May, 1965 and mid-November, 1968 was 12.8 per cent.

Would the Taoiseach agree that most of this was caused by the by-election bonanza of February, 1964?

That seems to be a different question.

The Taoiseach would not agree?

(Cavan): Deputy Lemass was responsible for that.
