Vol. 239 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Border Customs Concessions.

55.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider extending the customs concession arrangements regarding cross-border traffic to include hardship cases which are not covered by the existing regulations.

The question of extending the scheme under which concession passes are issued to certain categories of motorists to enable them to cross the border by unapproved roads has been the subject of discussions between the Revenue Commissioners and the British Commissioners of Customs and Excise. I hope to be in a position to make a statement in the matter at an early date.

Is the Minister satisfied, in the light of the experience of the working of these regulations, that they are, in fact, working very well?

I introduced them. Of course, they are.

After representations by me for over two years, and the Minister told me they were not workable. I am glad the Minister has seen the light of day at last.

The Deputy had nothing to do with the introduction of these concession passes except to take credit for my work.

I beg to differ.

Of course, the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries was very helpful to me in getting this done.

Do not forget the Minister for Local Government.
