Vol. 239 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - School for Handicapped Children.

61.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that an active local committee for handicapped children in County Roscommon have acquired a site for a school at Castlerea and have the requisite contribution necessary for the opening of a school for moderately handicapped children; and if in view of this he will state the plans he has to sponsor a school under the aegis of his Department for moderately handicapped children in the immediate future.

I have been in regular correpondence over the last year with the local association regarding the question of a school for moderately mentally handicapped children in Castlerea and recently an inspector of the Department visited the area and met representatives of the association. The chairman of the association undertook to forward certain information to the Department and it has been arranged that when this information is received a senior official will visit Castlerea to discuss the whole matter sympathetically with the local association.

Will the Minister meet a delegation from this committee?

I should be very glad to.

Whenever we can mutually arrange it.

Thank you.
