Vol. 239 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Small Industries Programme.

73.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can yet say when it is intended to extend the small industries programme; and, if so, if any particular regions have been specially scheduled for such extension.

74.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will now announce the extension of small industries grants to the whole country.

75.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will now announce the extension of small industries grants to South Tipperary.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose taking Questions Nos. 73, 74 and 75 together. The Government have decided to extend the small industries programme to the country as a whole, excluding Dublin, as from 1st April, 1969. It is proposed to extend the scheme on 1st September, 1969, to the Dublin area, where it will apply only to a limited range of selected male-employing industries.

Would the Minister say if legislation is necessary?

It can be done by Order?

As from the 1st of next month.

(Cavan): Will the effect of that be to put the 12 western counties on the same footing as the rest of the country?

No. The Deputy would want to study the scheme a little more; if he does he will see that the ratio is maintained.

(Cavan): The Minister will agree that the 12 western counties, which are in a peculiar position, should not lose their preference?

They will not lose it.

(Cavan): They should continue to have an advantage?

They will.

(Cavan): I am glad to hear that.

I understand that the position is that applications have been received and sanctioned and are awaiting the Ministerial Order. Can we take it payment will be made immediately the Order is made?

I think the Deputy is thinking about re-equipment grants, not the small industries project.

Does the one not tie in with the other?

Can the Minister say what treatment will be given to the West?

It will be the same as before. There is no change in the ratio.
