Vol. 239 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Re-arrangement of Roscommon Lands.

87.

asked the Minister for Lands how many acres of land in the County Roscommon are owned in common; where they are situated; how many families are concerned in each; and if the Land Commission has any schemes on hands to re-arrange those lands and establish individual ownership.

Particulars of the extent and location of land held in common are not readily available and the extraction of the detailed information requested would entail an enormous expenditure of time and labour and the diversion of special staff for the purpose which cannot be arranged at present. By way of general comment it may be stated that it is open to interested parties to apply to the Land Commission under the Land Acts for the partition of lands held in common. The relevant statutes are section 24, Land Act; 1939; section 25, Land Act, 1950; section 23, Land Act, 1953; and section 41, Land Act, 1965.

Apart from the partitioning of commonages pursuant to the provisions quoted above, the Land Commission are also disposed to undertake the actual division and re-arrangement of commonages which are productive or reasonably productive and where the persons likely to benefit are the owners of substandard holdings which can be significantly improved by dividing the commonage and bringing it into production. The Land Commission have no such schemes on hands in County Roscommon at present.

As regards the Ballinleg district, the Land Commission will examine the possibility of effecting some measure of re-arrangement as soon as possible.

Arising from the unsatisfactory reply to Question No. 12 on yesterday's Order Paper and, in view of the fact that Irish driving licences are recognised in other countries. I propose, with your permission, Sir, to raise the subject matter of mutual recognition of driving licences on the Adjournment this evening.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.

I wonder would the Chair make a decision on this; when does a Deputy rise to ask permission to raise a question on the Adjournment? Is it before or after the Order of Business is announced?

My memory was that it used to be after.

Even during Question Time.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the subject matter of Question No. 48 on today's Order Paper. I think it deserves priority over a question raised yesterday.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy Coughlan.
