Vol. 239 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inferior Quality Butter.

14.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to a report that butter of an inferior quality is finding its way into the market in Dublin; if any investigations have been made into this allegation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of allegations that some butter offered for sale on the home market is not of the normal high standard of Irish creamery butter. However, the quantity appears to be relatively small and very few specific complaints about butter quality are received in my Department; each of these is thoroughly investigated and any necessary remedial action taken. With a view to further strengthening the existing provisions in regard to butter quality, I propose to apply some of the additional requirements for concerns manufacturing for export to firms engaged in the packing of butter for the home market only.
