The average rate struck by local authorities in respect of 1957-58 and 1968-69 was 40s 10d in the £ and 71s 4d in the £ respectively.

(Cavan) and Mr. Reynolds asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the name of each local authority which has to date struck a rate for the year 1969-70, (b) the amount struck in each case, (c) the increase in each case compared with the year 1968-69, (d) the various headings under which the increase falls and (e) the number of local authorities who have deferred striking a rate and the reasons given for such deferment.
The information requested by the Deputies, in so far as it is available, is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

NOTES:
1. The information given at (a) to (d) of the above statement is in respect of those local authorities who have to date submitted a c of the estimate of expenses and the rate in the pound as adopted and determined by them.
2. As regard the information requested at (e), section 10 of the City and County Management (Amendment) Act, 1955, provides that a local authority shall by resolution adopt the estimate of expenses and determine the rate in the pound at an estimates meeting held at any time in the prescribed period. Section 10(5) of the 1955 Act provides that a local authority may adjourn such meeting as often as they wish subject to certain limitations. Local authorities are not required to notify the Minister of such adjournments.
3. The breakdown of the increase in costs as shown in column (d) above does not include small amounts in respect of increases or decreases in separate charges for items such as malicious injuries, etc.
4. Where a minus sign is shown this indicates a reduction rather than an increase.
