Vol. 239 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Travel Cards.

62.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will issue travel cards to old age pensioners similar to those issued to veterans of the War of Independence.

When the free travel scheme was introduced it was considered that the use of the pension book rather than a travel voucher or pass had most to recommend it as a means of identifying persons entitled to the facility. Experience of the operation of the scheme since then has served to confirm that view and I do not, therefore, propose to make any change in the arrangements. There is, of course, no comparison between the number of pensioners involved and the number of veterans of the War of Independence.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
