Vol. 239 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

4.

asked the Taoiseach the total average number of unemployed per year in respect of the period 1st January, 1957, to 31st December, 1968.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the number of persons out of work at mid-April for the years 1957 to 1968 as estimated for the annual labour force table. Annual averages on this basis are not available as the estimates are made once a year. While annual averages may be obtained from the Live Register figures which are compiled weekly and which provide an indication of current trends in the level of unemployment, their comparability over the period of years involved is affected by changes in content.

Following is the statement:—
