Vol. 239 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Food Processing Industry.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will ask the Potato Marketing Company and Ceimicí Teoranta to investigate the feasibility of establishing in the Inishowen area of Donegal a food processing factory based on potatoes which are produced in large quantities there.

I am at present examining how the potato growing industry as a whole (including usage of potatoes) might be improved and will bear in mind the Deputy's suggestion in that connection.

Has the Minister any idea as to when he will be in a position to make his findings public in relation to the matter?

No. It will be promised.

It is not so much a question of publishing my findings. I could have done that years ago. It is a question whether, on the findings, I believe something useful can be done. I do not believe in talking about these things unless I can see the performance as being possible.

I must have misunderstood the Minister. Did he not say that this matter was being examined and that he would convey the information to the Deputy? When will the Minister be in a position to convey this information to all Deputies in Donegal?

I am sorry if the Deputy misunderstood me. I said I would bear in mind Deputy Cunningham's suggestions in this connection in the examination and in any possible solution.

That is, of course, assuming that the Minister will still be there.

I have had that sort of assumption for years. I intend to continue to have it.

There are different views on this side of the House.

It is the people who count, not the Minister.

Only Deputy Harte.
