Vol. 239 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Estate for Athlone.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the lack of employment opportunities in Athlone and South Roscommon; and that Athlone is ideally suited for a major industrial estate; and if he will recommend the establishment of such estate there.

I am aware of the need for establishing new industries in the areas mentioned and in other areas. The Government have already provided valuable facilities to encourage the establishment and development of industries in all areas. It is for private enterprise to take advantage of these facilities and local interests should do their best to encourage private enterprise to set up industries in their own areas.

As regards industrial estates, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question (No. 62) in Dáil Éireann on 13th February, 1969 concerning the possibility of providing an industrial estate in another named area.
