Vol. 239 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Strength.

45.

asked the Minister for Finance the numerical strength of the Civil Service on 1st January, 1958, and 1st January, 1969.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in a statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Date

Number of Civil Servants

1st January, 1958

30,285

1st January, 1969

34,434

The figures are taken from the Civil Service census which relates to the first working day of the calendar year. The 1958 figure includes temporary classes (mainly scale-payment sub-postmasters, branch managers of employment exchanges and certain part-time employees) whose estimated total number is 2,700 at most and who were excluded from the census from 1959 onwards. The 1969 figure is provisional.
