Vol. 239 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Buses Safety Code.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has under consideration the introduction of a uniform safety code for school buses.

My Department, in consultation with the Department of Education and Córas Iompair Éireann, have drawn up a list of rules on the basic safety precautions to be exercised by children using buses to travel to and from school, and these rules have been issued to all schools. CIE has also issued to schools a special leaflet for children dealing with the essential precautions to be taken in travelling by bus.

In some cases they use the normal scheduled bus. Then there is a specially-designed school bus, that is, a bus used exclusively by schoolchildren. In some cases, a contractor hires the normal type of bus from CIE for the carriage of schoolchildren. In some cases, the mini-buses are used by contractors and in some cases the normal type of car is used by contractors.

This question relates to a safety code not to types of buses.

Has the Minister in mind any overall system of special signs for the different types of transport used for schoolchildren?

That question is being examined.
