Vol. 239 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Borrowings.

35.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount borrowed by the Government during the period 1st March, 1957 to the latest date for which figures are available.

The amount of net Exchequer borrowing from the 1st March, 1957, to the 21st March, 1969, was £641 million.

Investment in the country and its development.

And skyscrapers.

Did they not say that Deputy Dillon promised to take the rocks out of Connemara?

(Interruptions.)

I did and I took the rocks out of the gardens of Connemara. That was better than building skyscrapers for bureaucrats. I have no apology to make for that. I am proud of it. They are still doing it in Connemara.
