Vol. 239 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Industrialisation.

57.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the urgent need to have industries established in the towns of Headford, Tuam, Milltown, Dunmare, Williamstown, Glenmaddy, Ballymoe, Creggs, Ballygar, Ahascragh, Caltra, Menlough, Moylough, Mount Bellew, Athenry, Barnaderg and Kilkerrin, County Galway, thereby creating employment for people who are forced to emigrate to foreign countries; and, if so, what plans he has for the provision of industries there.

The Government's awareness of the need for establishing new industries in areas such as those named by the Deputy is evidenced by the valuable facilities provided to encourage the establishment and development of industries in all areas. It is for private enterprise to take advantage of these facilities and local interests should do their best to encourage private enterprise to set up industries in their own localities. I can assure the Deputy that any sound proposals by local or other interests for the establishment of industries in these and other western areas will receive the most sympathetic consideration.

I hope that the operation of the Small Industries Programme in County Galway will help to improve the employment position in the places mentioned.
