Vol. 239 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grants to Industry.

58.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total sum paid out on or approved for re-equipment, adaptation or new industry grants to date; and the sum represented by grants paid out to or approved for existing Irish firms at a higher level than that represented by the maximum adaptation or re-equipment grant.

From 1952, when grants were first made by An Foras Tionscal, up to the end of the last full year on 31st March, 1968, the total sums approved in grants and paid out of grants approved were:—

New Industry Grants:—

Approved

£33,732,600

Paid

£17,792,700

Adaptation Grants:—

Approved

£22,210,800

Paid

£9,387,850

During the same period a total amount of £6,552,370 was approved in New Industry grants for Irish undertakings at rates in excess of those mentioned by the Deputy. The total paid from such grants was £4,178,075. These amounts refer to Irish firms whether already in operation at the time of approval of grant or not.

No re-equipment grants were approved during the period up to 31st March, 1968.

Is the Minister now aware that in fact no Irish industry got grants at levels higher than according to the re-equipment or adaptation grants of 25 per cent which he told me in this House they had? The last sentence of the reply would indicate that.

No re-equipment grants were approved up to the 31st March, 1968.

At a higher level.

I just said "No re-equipment grants were approved."

That is the answer I required.

There is some supplementary information here. The approvals, I should mention, under this scheme from 1st April, 1968, to 28th February, 1969, amounted to £1,818,420.

The question asked how many industrialists got grants at a higher level than the adaptation or re-equipment level which is 25 per cent. It appears that the answer is none from the ream of figures the Minister has produced.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total amount allocated to industry and commerce during each of the years 1967 and 1968 under various subheads given in a reply of the 6th April, 1967.

The information is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.
