asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the high number of fatal road accidents caused by articulated trucks and lorries with trailers attached; and if he is satisfied that those vehicles are adequately lighted and that sufficient warning is given to overtaking traffic.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Articulated Trucks and Trailers.
There are no statistics readily available to show separately the incidence of fatal road accidents caused by articulated trucks and lorries with trailers as distinct from other types of large vehicles. With regard to the second part of the question, an informal committee recently set up in my Department to review the regulations relating to vehicles is considering as a matter of priority the lighting and marking of large vehicles and combinations of vehicles and the problems presented to other traffic by such vehicles.
Is the Minister aware that while, for a short period after the matter was raised in this House some years ago, such vehicles were adequately lighted, the position has deteriorated rapidly in the past six months or so?
I am not so aware.
The Minister does not travel very much at night.
I do. I travel at least as much as the Deputy.
(Cavan): Perhaps the Minister sits back in the car and does not see them, especially if he is going at 70 or 80 miles an hour.
I do not travel fast but I get there in time.
